JUST IN: No. 4 Player in America, Five-Star Defensive Lineman Elijah Griffin, Chooses Indiana Football Over Ohio State and Michigan for 2025 Class

The announcement came via a social media video posted on Wednesday morning, where Griffin, surrounded by family and coaches at his high school in Savannah, Georgia, revealed his decision while wearing a red Indiana Hoosiers cap. The commitment marks a historic recruiting win for Indiana, which has never landed a player ranked this high in modern recruiting history.

Griffin, standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 285 pounds, is widely regarded as one of the most dominant and physically gifted defensive linemen in the country. Known for his explosive first step, violent hands, and uncanny ability to collapse the pocket, Griffin has been compared to former top NFL draft picks like Quinnen Williams and Jeffery Simmons. He finished his junior season with 84 tackles, 17 sacks, and four forced fumbles, wreaking havoc on offensive lines across the Southeast.

“Indiana made me feel like a priority from day one,” Griffin said during his announcement. “Coach [Curt] Cignetti and the defensive staff didn’t just talk about football — they talked about building something real. They believe in me not just as a player, but as a person and leader. That meant everything.”

Griffin’s commitment is a colossal win for head coach Curt Cignetti, who took over the Hoosiers program in late 2023 with a bold vision to transform Indiana into a Big Ten contender. In less than two years, Cignetti and his staff have proven their recruiting prowess by pulling off what many are calling the biggest recruiting shock of the 2025 cycle.

Both Ohio State and Michigan had long been viewed as favorites to land Griffin, with crystal ball predictions heavily favoring the Buckeyes. Griffin had taken official visits to both Columbus and Ann Arbor, and insiders believed it was a two-horse race until Indiana quietly surged in the final weeks.

“This is a statement to the rest of the country,” Coach Cignetti said in a brief press release. “Indiana is no longer here to be overlooked. We’re building something elite, and Elijah Griffin is a cornerstone of that foundation.”

Griffin becomes the highest-ranked recruit ever to sign with Indiana, surpassing previous record-holder Randy Holtz, who was ranked No. 68 nationally back in 1991. With Griffin now onboard, Indiana’s 2025 recruiting class skyrockets into the national top 15 rankings, an unprecedented leap for the program.

Recruiting analysts and fans alike are calling this one of the biggest recruiting upsets of the last decade. More than that, it signals a shift in the balance of power in the Big Ten — especially with USC and UCLA entering the mix — where programs like Indiana are starting to flex their muscle in a conference long dominated by a few giants.

For Elijah Griffin, it’s more than just football — it’s legacy. And for Indiana, it’s a dream turning into reality.
