In a stunning development that has rocked the college basketball recruiting landscape, ESPN reports that Meleek Thomas, the highly-coveted 5-star guard from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has officially committed to Texas A&M, spurning blue-blood programs Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
Thomas, widely considered one of the top guards in the 2025 class, made his decision public on Wednesday morning via a video posted to his social media platforms. “I want to thank God, my family, my coaches, and everyone who’s supported me,” he said. “After long consideration, I’ll be continuing my basketball and academic journey at Texas A&M University.”
Ranked No. 7 nationally by ESPN and the No. 1 combo guard in his class, Thomas had received offers from nearly every top program in the nation. His final four choices came down to Texas A&M, Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee—programs all known for elite-level competition in the SEC.
At 6-foot-4 with elite ball-handling skills, deep shooting range, and a killer instinct in clutch moments, Thomas has drawn comparisons to NBA stars like Jamal Murray and Bradley Beal. He averaged 22.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game during his junior season and was named to the McDonald’s All-American Game watchlist.
Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams called the commitment “a massive turning point” for the program.
“We’ve recruited Meleek for over a year. He’s the type of player that changes a culture—both on the court and in the locker room,” said Williams in a statement. “His work ethic, toughness, and leadership are exactly what we need to take the next step as a program.”
Sources close to the recruitment said Thomas was drawn to Texas A&M’s vision of building a contender through discipline, development, and family culture. The Aggies have not traditionally been a powerhouse in recruiting, making this one of the biggest recruiting wins in school history.
While Kentucky and Alabama were seen as frontrunners early in the process, insiders suggest that A&M’s persistence, combined with NIL opportunities and the chance to lead a program rather than blend into an already-loaded roster, played a big role in swaying Thomas.
Social media exploded following the announcement, with Aggies fans celebrating what many consider the most impactful signing in years. Former A&M players, including NBA guard Alex Caruso, congratulated Thomas online, calling him a “game-changer.”
With Meleek Thomas now onboard, Texas A&M is expected to land one of the top recruiting classes of 2025. The commitment sends a message to the rest of the SEC: the Aggies are no longer satisfied with being underdogs—they’re building a program to contend for titles.
The road ahead is long, but with a player like Thomas leading the charge, Aggieland has every reason to believe a new era is on the horizon.
