During his 28-year tenure, he led the Buckeyes to five national championships, 13 Big Ten titles, and countless unforgettable moments on the gridiron. Beyond his coaching record, Hayes was known for his fierce competitiveness, intellectual approach to the game, and unrelenting commitment to discipline and education. His famous “three yards and a cloud of dust” philosophy defined a generation of hard-nosed football that became synonymous with the Midwest.
But Hayes’ legacy stretches beyond wins and losses. He was a teacher at heart—literally and figuratively.
