Wilson, a 6-foot-2 guard out of Dallas, Texas, put together one of the most dominant seasons in recent memory, leading her high school, Southlake Prep, to a perfect 34–0 record and a state championship. She averaged an astounding 28.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 3.9 steals per game. But the numbers only begin to tell the story of her impact. Whether it was a clutch buzzer-beater or a momentum-shifting defensive stop, Wilson consistently delivered when it mattered most.
Her poise under pressure and maturity beyond her years have caught the attention of college scouts for some time, but this season solidified her status as the top prospect in the nation. She committed to Clemson in late 2023, becoming the program’s highest-ranked recruit in history. The Tigers’ fan base erupted in excitement upon the announcement, and now, with this national recognition, expectations have only grown.
“I’m just so grateful,” Wilson said in an emotional interview after receiving the award. “This honor means everything to me, my family, my teammates, and coaches. It’s a reflection of all the sacrifices we made together.”
But Wilson’s greatness isn’t confined to the hardwood. With a 4.1 GPA and active involvement in community initiatives—including organizing a girls’ youth basketball clinic and volunteering at local shelters—she represents what the Gatorade Player of the Year award is truly about. Her leadership off the court has inspired younger athletes to dream bigger and work harder.
Clemson head coach Amanda Rivers had nothing but praise for her incoming star: “Ava is a once-in-a-generation player. Her skill set, IQ, and competitive drive are elite, but what sets her apart is her character. We’re not just getting a great athlete; we’re getting a leader, a scholar, and someone who will help elevate our entire program.”
With her high school career now complete, Wilson turns her focus to the next chapter. Clemson women’s basketball, already on the rise, is poised to enter a new era with her arrival. The program has shown steady improvement over the past few seasons, but with Wilson in the fold, the Tigers are eyeing ACC titles and deep NCAA tournament runs.
The 2024–2025 Gatorade National Player of the Year award marks a crowning achievement in Ava Wilson’s already remarkable journey. And for Clemson fans, it’s just the beginning. College basketball, take notice—Ava Wilson has arrived.
