CONGRATULATIONS: Arizona State Stays at No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports College Baseball Poll — Sun Devils’ SEC Rival Texas Rises to No. 2 While North Carolina, Arkansas, and Oregon Climb Rankings
In a season filled with powerhouse matchups, upsets, and dramatic finishes, the Sun Devils continue to shine as the most consistent and dominant force on the diamond.
Led by a balanced combination of explosive offense and elite pitching, Arizona State has made a convincing case as the top team in the nation. Their recent series sweep over a tough USC squad not only solidified their top ranking but also sent a message to the rest of college baseball — the road to Omaha runs through Tempe.
With a team batting average hovering above .320 and a pitching staff that’s limiting opponents to under three runs a game, Head Coach Willie Bloomquist has his squad playing with swagger and discipline. “It’s about focus, heart, and execution,” Bloomquist said after Sunday’s win. “This team shows up every day ready to compete, and I’m proud of how they’ve handled the pressure.”
Meanwhile, climbing right behind them in the No. 2 spot is their formidable SEC rival, the Texas Longhorns. After an early-season stumble, Texas has roared back with a statement series win over LSU and a dramatic walk-off victory against Vanderbilt. The Longhorns’ surge is fueled by a mix of veterans and emerging stars — most notably sophomore ace Derek Walton, who has notched back-to-back complete games with double-digit strikeouts.
Texas’ offense, anchored by senior slugger Colby Maddox, has also started clicking at the right time, averaging over seven runs a game in their last five outings. The rise to No. 2 puts them in a strong position heading into a tough SEC schedule stretch, with eyes firmly set on a top seed in the NCAA tournament.
North Carolina continues to impress, rising to No. 3 in the poll. The Tar Heels are proving to be a dangerous mix of speed and savvy, with a base-stealing brigade that keeps opponents on edge and a bullpen that consistently shuts games down late.
Not far behind are the Arkansas Razorbacks at No. 4. Despite dealing with early-season injuries, the Hogs have rebounded thanks to gritty performances from their underclassmen and a fearless approach at the plate. Their 10-game win streak includes key victories over Tennessee and Ole Miss, signaling a team that’s catching fire at the right time.
Rounding out the top five is Oregon. The Ducks’ resurgence this season has been one of college baseball’s biggest surprises. Behind lights-out closer Jamie Dorsey and a dynamic infield led by junior Levi Smith, Oregon is now a serious contender for a College World Series berth.
As the regular season edges toward its final stretch, all eyes will be on these top programs. With fierce battles ahead and postseason dreams on the line, the pressure is mounting. But for now, Arizona State basks in the glory of being the No. 1 team in America — and they’re not looking to give that crown up any time soon.
