Former Texas Tech Raiders football standout and Biletnikoff Award winner Michael Crabtree has officially accepted a newly created position within the Texas Tech University football program. Crabtree, who is widely regarded as the greatest wide receiver in the history of Texas Tech, will now serve as the Wide Receiver Development Coach. This role was specifically tailored to leverage Crabtree’s elite experience, technical skills, and deep understanding of the wide receiver position, aiming to elevate the Red Raiders’ receiving corps to natonal prominence.
Crabtree’s return to his alma mater has been met with overwhelming excitement from both the Red Raider fanbase and the wider college football community. Many remember Crabtree’s legendary stint from 2006 to 2008, where he not only shattered school records but also claimed back-to-back Biletnikoff Awards, given annually to the nation’s top wide receiver. His unforgettable game-winning touchdown against Texas in 2008 remains one of the most iconic moments in college football history. His presence alone is expected to reignite the program’s recruiting efforts and inspire current players to emulate his work ethic and excellence.
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire expressed immense enthusiasm about the addition of Crabtree to the coaching staff. “Michael brings something that cannot be taught — the experience of being the best. His knowledge of route running, game preparation, and mental toughness will be invaluable to our receivers,” McGuire stated during the press conference. He added that the decision to create this role was not only about honoring a legend but also about strategically investing in player development to push the program to new heights in the highly competitive Big 12 conference.
For Crabtree, the move signifies more than just a job — it’s a homecoming. “This program changed my life. I’ve always said I wanted to give back, and now I get to do that by helping these young guys succeed both on and off the field,” Crabtree said. He emphasized his commitment to mentoring players on not only technical skills like footwork, catching, and route precision but also on discipline, leadership, and transitioning to the professional level. Crabtree also hinted at future ambitions of possibly moving into larger coaching roles down the line.
Fans have already flooded social media with messages of excitement and anticipation, with many believing this could be the spark the Red Raiders need to return to national contention. Sports analysts also praised the move, calling it a “masterstroke” by the Texas Tech athletic department. As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on how Crabtree’s influence transforms the receiving unit and whether his impact will help Texas Tech reclaim its reputation as one of the most electrifying offenses in college football.
