Los Angeles is in the thick of the NFC playoff race, young and healthy, and currently enjoying a three-game winning streak.

The Los Angeles Rams (+7.5) are coming off a significant win over the Cleveland Browns (-1.5), who are in the AFC playoff hunt. LA put on a strong offensive display, scoring 36 points with 399 yards of total offense against Cleveland’s top-5 defense. Quarterback Matthew Stafford passed for 279 yards and three touchdowns, and running back Kyren Williams added 88 yards and another touchdown to his already impressive stat line.

Rams fans’ confidence is through the roof last week, with 98% of them expressing confidence in the team’s direction, which is not surprising given the team’s recent success.

Fans’ high levels of confidence are understandable given that Los Angeles seems to be winning lately. The squad is presently enjoying a three-game winning streak, which included a significant sweep of Seattle that is already influencing their postseason ranking.

Because of their divisional victories, the Rams are currently one spot ahead of the Seahawks in the eight seed, just outside of the playoffs with a 6-6 record. Though they are 6-6 as well, the Green Bay Packers (-6.5) regrettably possess the tiebreaker over Los Angeles for the final wild card spot. Above them are the 6-6 Minnesota Vikings (-3), who have recently struggled with quarterback issues. They are gearing up for an extremely difficult schedule that includes two games against the Detroit Lions (-3), who are currently leading the NFC North. Additionally, they still have one game left against the Packers, which virtually ensures that either Minnesota or Green Bay will lose at least one more, which could work in LA’s favor.

Not only is this season’s somewhat unexpected success and the playoffs noteworthy, but for the first time in a long time, the Rams’ future also appears to be very bright and promising. Although the era of Les Snead’s “F them picks” and big-name acquisitions was exciting in its own right (Hey! We got a ring!), it was also risking the future for short-term gain.

It feels so different this time around. With the second-youngest squad in the NFL and an outstanding rookie class, the Rams appear to be built for the long haul. Puka Nacua, a wide receiver, is a star and may be the best wideout available in the 2023 draft overall. Both OLB Byron Young and DT Kobie Turner appear to be defensive mainstays for many years to come, and even our rookie punter Ethan Evans has looked excellent with his field-flipping punts. Along with Aaron Donald, Matthew Stafford, and even head coach Sean McVay, who appears noticeably looser and more imaginative in his play-calling, the youthful energy appears to have completely rejuvenated them.

The Rams play the Ravens today Sunday, and while it will be a difficult game, a victory in Baltimore could have a significant impact on the team’s postseason prospects. On paper, they also have one of the easier schedules; after this week, they play three of their four remaining games against teams that have a losing record, namely the Giants, Commanders, and Saints. While it would be fantastic to see Los Angeles make the playoffs in their first season following this “retooling” plan and disprove all of the early-season skeptics, the team’s long-term plan may be the most exciting aspect of the franchise at the moment.
