Former Cleveland Cavalier and current Los Angeles Lakers player LeBron James voiced his displeasure with the Cavaliers’ court configuration.

The unique design of the court, which features a substantial drop of approximately 10 inches from the basketball court to the thin rubber sheet covering the hockey ice underneath it, is the source of concern. Although this layout has been used for more than 1,200 regular-season games—including multiple postseason runs spearheaded by LeBron James—the possible risks were not made public until Smith’s injury.

Erik Spoelstra, the coach of the Miami Heat, called the court “dangerous” and doubted that anything would change regarding the surface. The Heat have formally communicated their concerns to the NBA league office. No other court in the league has a drop as big as this one, according to Spoelstra and other NBA insiders.

When asked if he agreed with Spoelstra and the Heat about addressing safety concerns with the floor, he [replied]…’Yes, the league should look at it,'” according to Joe Vardon of The Athletic. They ought to take care of it.

During their morning walkthrough, the Lakers—the first team to play in Cleveland following Smith’s injury—talked about the safety of the court. In line with LeBron James, Lakers coach Darvin Ham stressed the importance of assessing and correcting the situation in order to avoid more injuries. According to Austin Reaves, it’s “a little scary.”

For the past 30 years, the Cleveland Cavaliers have relied on their distinctive court design, which features an elevated surface. Although the team feels comfortable with the setup, the recent incident has spurred a more general discussion about whether changes are necessary to guarantee player safety. The league is considering replacing the substantial wooden blocks that stand between the court and the ice as a potential solution as it struggles with these issues.

The NBA must address safety concerns and make the required adjustments to avoid future injuries on the Cleveland court while the NBA community waits for additional developments.
