MONTEVIDEO, 18 October Despite Neymar leaving the game with what appeared to be a major knee injury late in the first half, Uruguay defeated Brazil 2-0 today in their 2026 World Cup qualifying match thanks to goals from Darwin Nunez and Nicolas de la Cruz.
Nunez scored the game’s first goal with a diving header in the 42nd minute, and Brazil’s night got much worse two minutes later when Neymar was injured after a scuffle for the ball with De la Cruz.
After receiving treatment for a while, Neymar exited the pitch on a stretcher and was clearly upset.
According to sources with the Brazil FA, the forward had a significant left knee injury and will be evaluated to see whether there was ligament damage.
In the 77th minute, De la Cruz increased the hosts’ advantage with a close-range shot; Nunez assisted.
With seven points after the win, Uruguay is now tied for second place with Brazil and Venezuela in the Conmebol standings.
