Kevin De Bruyne, a midfielder for Manchester City, has acknowledged that he grew up to be a huge Liverpool supporter.
Online images of a young De Bruyne professing his love for the Reds have previously appeared. The Belgian celebrity, though, has never brought it up in public before.
That changed when a group of kids via Football Escapes on Instagram requested De Bruyne to name his favourite team when he was a kid.
“Liverpool, when I was young,” the 32-year-old acknowledged. De Bruyne was adamant when asked if this would lead to his decision to join Liverpool.
He exclaimed, “No! No.”
You must want to, Kev; just do it!
De Bruyne is unavailable to Liverpool.
For Liverpool, De Bruyne barely qualifies as “one who got away,” therefore it’s a shame they weren’t able to capitalise on his fan base.
His talent was always obvious because Chelsea signed him when he was a young player. When the Belgian international departed Stamford Bridge, few would have anticipated he would develop into the World-Class midfielder he is now, but after he flourished at Wolfsburg, it did become more apparent.
Perhaps Liverpool could have been a contender when City paid £55 million to acquire him back in 2015.
True, the Reds weren’t the appealing option they are now. They were far less so back then. However, they did have some cash on hand after just spending a combined £63 million on Robeto Firmino and Christian Benteke.
Given his allegiances, Liverpool should have been able to convince KDB to support their initiative. Think about what he might have developed into under Jurgen Klopp.
There was never going to be an opportunity to remove him from City after that. Despite not doing well right away, De Bruyne soon became the Citizen’s main man.
