A January transfer might still be possible, but with Liverpool’s increased midfield depth, it seems unlikely.
Few would criticise Liverpool’s summer transfers, which saw the arrival of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru End as the Reds rebuilt their midfield, given how Liverpool’s 2023–24 season has thus far developed.
Fluminense’s 22-year-old deep lying playmaker André, who was widely rumoured to be one of Liverpool’s top targets but whose club was unable to trade owing to an ongoing Copa Libertadores campaign, was one possible addition who missed out.
André has since assisted Fluminense in reaching the competition’s final, and Liverpool appears to be well-stocked in the centre of the pitch, but as we enter another international break, the rumour mongers say their interest is still alive.
In order to secure their spot in the final and maintain interest in André, Liverpool reportedly sent scouts to observe André and his club defeat Internacional last Thursday. Prior to this, there were rumours that Fluminense would be amenable to a January €25 million sale.
There have been speculations that Fulham would recruit André to replace Bayern target Joo Palhinha after Liverpool failed to sign him in the summer due to Fluminense’s demand for a €10 million premium for a summer sale and the player’s reluctance to push for a move.
While the player, perhaps unsurprisingly, is said to prefer a move to a club competing in Europe, in light of the summer midfield signings and the standout play of youngster Curtis Jones in particular, Liverpool may simply not have room for André right now.
