According to Piero Hincapie’s agent, Liverpool passed up the opportunity to sign the Bayer Leverkusen defender during the summer transfer window.

The Reds were interested in Manuel Sierra’s client, a midfielder for Chelsea, but they gave priority to adding Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch to their squad this summer.

Sierra revealed to Joaquin Saavedra of Ftbol Sin Casette that Liverpool and a few other teams are ‘talking’ about a possible January transfer for Hincapie, who is expected to fetch roughly €50 million. Liverpool were interested in him, but at the time they decided to spend in the midfield, he claimed (via Liverpool Echo). They are stating, like other teams, that it won’t be less than €50 million for January.

The agent Sierra is well-known to Liverpool supporters because this summer’s Caicedo transfer controversy revolved around him. When asked why the Ecuadorian midfielder chose Stamford Bridge over a move to Anfield, Sierra emphasised that Caicedo chose the Blues because of their long-standing relationship.

He said: “The issue of not going to Liverpool instead of Chelsea was also very questioned, the offers were similar in every way. He ended up at Chelsea because he had given the word to Chelsea and he told them for quite some time.”

Despite Caicedo’s transfer decision, Sierra and Liverpool are thought to remain on good terms, which may be important in any Hincapie move. Since Joel Matip’s contract is slated to expire in the summer of 2019, the Reds will undoubtedly look for a centre defender. At the age of 21, Hincapie has made over 100 senior appearances for both club and country. His reported price tag is in the neighbourhood of €50 million, making him a typical PSG transfer target.

Andre Trindade has also been connected to Liverpool, with Anfield Watch reporting earlier this week that the Brazilian midfielder is ‘dreaming’ of moving to Anfield.
