As of Wednesday, the Buffalo Bills had designated cornerback Tre’Davious White as a post-June 1 cut. The former all-star cornerback is still available to sign with any team, but given his lengthy history of injuries, should the Los Angeles Rams make an offer?
If no team is willing to give him a big offer—which they might not—then it might be worthwhile.
With a league-high six interceptions in 2019 while playing for the Bills, White was a first team All-Pro and placed sixth in the Defensive Player of the Year vote. White’s career has declined over the last three seasons: he has missed six games in 2021, 11 games in 2022, and 13 games in 2023. White was a Pro Bowl player once again in 2020.
That makes thirty games lost over the previous three years.
White has been one of the NFL’s best corners when healthy, which is almost never. There’s a good chance that Sean McVay and new defensive coordinator Chris Shula would give White’s free agency some thought because the Rams need a cornerback and can’t run it back with Derion Kendrick and Cobie Durant. Is there really any danger involved with trying him out if he doesn’t have a definite contract?
His circumstances are similar to those of cornerback Jason Verrett, who was unable to play on the field for the remainder of his career despite becoming a Pro Bowler in his second season. After 2016, Verrett only had one more season in which he appeared in multiple games, although even in that season, he was a relatively excellent player: in 2020, he played in 13 games with the 49ers.
However, White is essentially in the same predicament as Verrett, who wasn’t trustworthy. The Rams might still want to give him a call and ask if he’s willing to come to Los Angeles for a tryout, even if there’s no money up front.
