Today’s matinee game pitting your Los Angeles Lakers against one of the other struggling, talented teams in the Western Conference will feature a diminished Phoenix Suns team.
As per the most recent NBA injury report, shooting guard Bradley Beal, who is the third star on the Suns’ “Big Three” (albeit a far-off third), is still sidelined due to his ongoing treatment for a left hamstring injury.
The 30-year-old former three-time All-Star has missed 27 games for his new team so far due to a variety of injuries, including this hamstring problem, which has been bothering him for the past three games. All-Star Phoenix point guard Devin Booker and All-Star Phoenix power forward Kevin Durant have handled the majority of the ball handling for the Suns, so when he’s healthy, he’s been fairly effective in a supporting role.
However, starting center Jusuf Nurkic is only expected to play despite suffering from a sprained right ankle. The big man depth of Phoenix is not very deep behind him. With a sore left groin, veteran shooting guard Eric Gordon, Beal’s primary backup, is dangerously doubtful to play.
Damion Lee, the bench guard for the Suns, has also been ruled out after missing the majority of the season due to a torn meniscus.
The 33-24 Phoenix, led by former Los Angeles Lakers coach Frank Vogel, are currently ranked eighth in the Western Conference, one spot ahead of the 31-27 Lakers in ninth. As the postseason approaches, both teams’ overall rankings are a little below their preseason projections, but considering their superior talent, it still appears possible that they could defeat any team in any given playoff series.
