Are Pete Alonso and the Mets going to sign an extension?

The future of slugger Pete Alonso is a hot topic of discussion right now if you’re a New York Mets fan. Even though the superstar has stated that he wants to stay with the team, it seems likely that he will test the open market when he becomes free agent in the winter of 2019. Even the owner, Steve Cohen, has expressed that, but there is hope that he would resign.

However, Alonso’s great agent Scott Boras tries to utilize leverage to get his clients more money, therefore it might be more difficult for Alonso to sign a contract before free agency. According to insider Ken Rosenthal:

“I would say probably Scott Boras is holding him back. Scott Boras, with guys like Pete Alonso generally prefers them to go to the open market. I know everybody’s sick of me saying that way, but generally that’s true he doesn’t love extensions. Let’s say the Mets offered $200 million right now, to Pete Alonso, and that’s a great offer obviously. That’s above Freeman, its well above Freeman and Goldschmidt, but if you’re Scott Boras you’re thinking that’s the floor where do we go from there.”

Given his performance during the first five seasons of his major league career, the former Florida Gator should receive a massive deal, and the Mets are anticipated to aggressively pursue Alonso when he becomes a free agent. For the record, Edwin Diaz and Brandon Nimmo both signed new contracts with New York after becoming free agents.

It’s difficult to picture Pete Alonso playing for another team because he is such an important member of this team. However, when it comes to contract negotiations, you can count on Boras to try to extract as much money as he can from the Mets.
