On Friday, the New York Mets lost out on a second free-agent starting pitcher.
This offseason, New York has been linked to a number of elite free-agent starters, but it hasn’t been able to close a big deal just yet. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the former ace of the Orix Buffaloes, was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Mets’ best efforts.
The Mets appear to have shifted their attention to former Washington Nationals, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, and Cleveland Guardians pitcher Lucas Giolito after passing on Yamamoto. According to Tim Healey of Newsday Sports, the Mets apparently made Giolito an offer, but they lost out to the Boston Red Sox.
“The Mets were among the most aggressive teams trying to sign Lucas Giolito and indeed made an offer, per source,” Healey said. “But he decided on the Red Sox (and a contract that makes a lot of sense for both parties). One fewer rotation fit on the board.”
Although Joey Wendle and Luis Severino, two former All-Stars, were acquired this summer, New York still has to improve greatly. Fortunately, the Mets still have a number of elite free agent possibilities at their disposal; nevertheless, swift action is obviously required if the team is to complete a deal.
Like many other teams, the Mets still need to strengthen their starting rotation in the offseason. With Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell among the other top starters still available, New York will face stiff competition and will need to move swiftly.
