Breaking news: Alabama is expected to hire Arizona Cardinals scout Stephen Wise and Georgia Tech executive director of recruiting Alex Mathis as members of its front office, Wise has worked for Arizona the last five years. Mathis was executive director of recruiting at UCF and a high school coach in Georgia before heading to Georgia Tech.

Alabama is expected to make a significant behind-the-scenes move by adding Stephen Wise and Alex Mathis to its growing front office operation. The additions underscore Alabama’s continued commitment to modernizing its infrastructure by blending NFL-level evaluation with elite collegiate recruiting expertise.

Wise arrives from the Arizona Cardinals, where he has spent the last five years working as a scout. During his tenure in the NFL, Wise gained extensive experience in player evaluation, film analysis, and roster construction—skills that are increasingly valuable in today’s college football landscape shaped by the transfer portal and NIL era.

His background at the professional level is expected to strengthen Alabama’s internal evaluation processes, particularly in identifying developmental talent and projecting long-term potential. Bringing an NFL-trained eye into the college front office reflects Alabama’s continued shift toward an “NFL-style” operational model away from the practice field.

Mathis, meanwhile, joins Alabama from Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, where he served as executive director of recruiting. Known for his organizational skills and recruiting strategy, Mathis played a key role in coordinating visits, managing recruiting boards, and building relationships across the Southeast.

Prior to Georgia Tech, Mathis held the same executive recruiting role at UCF Knights and previously worked as a high school football coach in Georgia. That grassroots background has helped him develop deep ties with prep programs and high school coaches, a valuable asset in one of the nation’s most talent-rich regions.

Together, the expected hires of Wise and Mathis represent a calculated effort by Alabama Crimson Tide to strengthen its front office with proven evaluators and recruiters. As college football continues to evolve, Alabama is once again positioning itself at the forefront—this time not just on the field, but in the offices where rosters are built and sustained.
