Alabama defensive back Dre Kirkpatrick Jr. is officially RETURNING for the 2026 season, a welcome development confirmed by Touchdown Alabama and the player’s own social media announcement on January 13, 2026. The sophomore legacy, son of former Crimson Tide All-American and NFL first-rounder Dre Kirkpatrick Sr., will be back in Tuscaloosa after a challenging 2025 year that saw him sidelined for most of the second half due to an indefinite suspension. This return adds valuable depth and experience to a secondary group navigating roster changes, portal moves, and potential NFL departures.

Kirkpatrick’s 2025 campaign started promisingly, as he appeared in eight games primarily as a rotational piece and special teams contributor. He totaled nine tackles (including one for loss), a forced fumble, and a pass breakup, earning special teams player of the week honors from the coaches after a strong showing against Vanderbilt. Highlights included a big outing against ULM with four tackles and a forced fumble before a targeting penalty ended his night early, showcasing his physicality and instincts in limited action.
The season took a sharp turn in early November during Alabama’s bye week, when Kirkpatrick was arrested on charges including three counts of reckless endangerment, one count of attempting to elude, and speeding after allegedly accelerating away from police in a high-traffic area. Coach Kalen DeBoer announced the indefinite suspension shortly after, stating Kirkpatrick understood the consequences of his actions. He missed the remainder of the regular season, SEC Championship implications, and the postseason run, including the Rose Bowl loss to Indiana.
Despite the setback, Kirkpatrick’s great motor and high ceiling remain evident to scouts and insiders. Described as a natural playmaker who “flies to the ball” without overthinking, his athleticism, quick reactions, and versatility make him a prime candidate for increased snaps in 2026. As a true sophomore (with three years of eligibility left), he projects as a key special teamer and potential starter or nickel contributor in the defensive backfield.
The return is timely for Alabama, which faces secondary questions with veterans potentially entering the NFL Draft and freshmen like five-star Jireh Edwards joining the mix. Kirkpatrick’s presence provides continuity, leadership potential through growth, and a redemption story aligned with the program’s emphasis on accountability. With spring ball approaching, expect him to compete aggressively and prove his value on both defense and returns.
